Johnson Beach Cleanup started with something simple: a walk on the beach.
When my parents bought a beach house in Corolla, North Carolina, I spent more time enjoying the coastline I had always loved. But the more I walked the beach, the more I noticed things that didn't belong—plastic bottle caps, grocery bags, glass bottles, fishing line, and other trash scattered across the sand.
One day, I even stepped on a piece of broken glass buried in the sand. Thankfully, it didn't cut my foot, but it made me think about what could happen to someone else—a child running barefoot, a family enjoying their vacation, or the wildlife that calls these beaches home.
That moment stuck with me.
For more than a year, I couldn't shake the idea of doing something about it. I realized that waiting for someone else to clean our beaches wasn't the answer. Real change starts when ordinary people decide to take action.
That's why I created Johnson Beach Cleanup.
